SEND Support
We recognise that trainees learn in different ways and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can access learning and achieve their potential.
Our SEND team works with trainees, parents/carers, staff and external agencies to ensure that trainees who require additional support are able to access learning and make good progress during their time at college.
How We Support Trainees with SEND
Trainees may have additional needs relating to:
communication and interaction
cognition and learning
social, emotional or mental health needs
physical or sensory needs
Support is tailored to the individual trainee and may include:
Quality first/adaptive teaching strategies within lessons
study skills and organisational support
assistive technology
exam access arrangements
one-to-one or small group support where appropriate
Trainees with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) receive coordinated support from the SEND team and teaching staff. We work closely with Local Authorities to ensure the provision outlined in the EHCP is implemented and reviewed through annual review meetings.
Where appropriate, trainees may also be assessed for exam access arrangements in line with Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations.
Identifying and Requesting Support
Trainees may join the college with identified needs or may request support during their studies.
We encourage trainees to share information about any additional needs as early as possible during the application or enrolment process, so that appropriate support can be put in place from the start of their course.
Information about support needs may come from:
previous schools or colleges
Education, Health and Care Plans
screening or assessment
discussions with trainees, tutors, teachers or parents/carers
Trainees can request support at any time by:
speaking to their tutor/teachers
contacting the SEND team
speaking to a member of the pastoral team
Support plans are reviewed regularly with trainees to ensure the support provided is effective.
Working with external services
Where appropriate, we work with external professionals and services to support trainees, including Local Authorities, health services and specialist support agencies.
